”We are creatures that should not exist by natural law”
”We are creatures that should not exist by natural law”
I came across this unexpected and fine piece of dialogue the other day, a glorification of nihilism, which reminded me the reading I had done with Schopenhauer many years ago as I briefly ventured into philosophy. TV series have come a very long way since "Starsky & Hutch".

"I think human consciousness was a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self- aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law."
Huh. That sounds god-fucking-awful, Rust.
"We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, this accretion of sensory experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody when, in fact, everybody's nobody."
I wouldn't go around spouting that shit, I was you. People around here don't think that way. I don't think that way.
"I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal."
So what's the point of getting out bed in the morning?
"I tell myself I bear witness, but the real answer is that it's obviously my programming, and I lack the constitution for suicide."
My luck, I picked today to get to know you. a word from you, and...
"You asked."
Yeah. And now I'm begging you to shut the fuck up.

Of course one can only feel pity for this character but, you didn't say if you had the context - i.e. saw this first episode - the dialogue comes after having been introduced into a world of a dire reality, hopefully excessive.
I still have to read all of this other dialogue you linked (thx for that) but, in comparison, I find the statements of Rust to be extremely consive and nonetheless to stand well together. What could be added?
This character has obviously been torn by that topic over a very long time, certainly long enough to deliver his thoughts with a very strong confidence.
The producers and writers of this series have taken some risks with their audience. They obviously have made choices.
We watched this outstanding TV show twice within one week.
Michael Hendrickson A ride which has been quite rough at times, I certainly agree with you. Glad that we have been sharing that experience.
Such series will most certainly appeal to anyone with a certain life experience; so that we can find it "believable" as you said. On the other hand I am not sure how it would be perceived by anyone below 30. For example, today, I am not sure I would enjoy "Starsky & Hutch" at all, whereas back then I loved it.
Anyone younger one out there care to comment?
Michael Hendrickson
In recent years I have been equally strongly glued by a couple of other series, similar in many aspects, "Dexter" and "Breaking Bad". I know I am not doing you a favor, assuming you might have had other plans to occupy your leisure time :-).
On the other hand, I am coming out of these experiences with a much better understanding of the importance of the writer(s) and of the casting. In most cases there even will be a team of writers contributing to a consistent and gripping storyline spanning over great periods of times.
I'd say this has developed itself into a true art form where, in previous centuries, we only had printed medium.
