"Humankind ascended to the top so quickly that the ecosystem was not given time to adjust.

"Humankind ascended to the top so quickly that the ecosystem was not given time to adjust. Moreover, humans themselves failed to adjust."

I love this book, it addresses so many of my favorite topics: history, evolution, sociology, biology, myths, religions, etc.

"Most top predators of the planet are majestic creatures. Millions of years of dominion have filled them with self-confidence. Sapiens by contrast is more like a banana-republic dictator."

Yep, mother Nature has lost the control over the power that our brain gives us. We're now hurting her.

"Having so recently been one of the underdogs of the savannah, we are full of fears and anxieties over our position, which makes us doubly cruel and dangerous. Many historical calamities, from deadly wars to ecological catastrophes, have resulted from this over-hasty jump."

I have it as audio-book as well and it was playing while jogging, turned me into a silly smiling jogger.

I have it on my table right now! Waiting for my son to read it first, though :-) He's 13 now and extremely interested in evolution and the history of mankind

Jannik Lindquist Gee, what a boy! I am not sure my daughter wouldn't even consider glancing at such material. I hope he won't make you wait too long, such a good read for adults as well.

My daughter - who's 11 - don't care much about stuff like that either. She wants to be a writer or a singer/songwriter :-)

Steve S Aah! Who are we to define what is good nor not :-)

Zaid El-Hoiydi Who else is there to define what's good?

Steve S In my opinion one of the most underrated progress that science has achieved over the last three decades is in its understanding of how ecosystems work. So, what's good (or beneficial) for them is also good for us :-)

Zaid El-Hoiydi It's a start. What we really need is a branch of engineering based on this.
