Yuval Harari interviewed on TVO.

Yuval Harari interviewed on TVO.org presents some of the salient points of his highly thought provoking and entertaining "Sapiens: A History of Humankind" book.
Quoted from the video clip:
On the future of our species over the next couple of centuries "I think we are heading into upgrading Homo Sapiens into Gods" "[...] the future of [Homo Sapiens] life belong to intelligent design"

I think he's profoundly wrong about that. Time will tell

Jannik Lindquist I hope so too but a great many are already hard at work on biotechnology and he is just extrapolating on that effort for our near future. That particular part is found within the last 5 to 10 minutes of the video by the way.

I guess that if autonomic real intelligence were to be it would get rid of annoying apes telling it what to do.

Xabier Ostale Some of us are aware of our weaknesses and thus can make sure A.I. won't have them.

Must be quite fun trying to raise consciousness out of computer software these days :-)

Well, not in home computers, but in super computers and new technologies made by corporations. What I don't get is what sort of intelligence would be that. No pain, no feeling sleepy, no headaches, no itchy feelings, no traumas from the past, no bias or fears, no flu, no back pain, no hunger, nor elation or feelings of gratitude, nothing. Just sheer intelligence. It sounds like a hyper-psychopathic mode consciousness.
That scenario is terrifying to say the very least. I doubt it's feasible, but if it is, we are doomed by our stupidity creating such a monstrous thing. The sentient part is biological, not mechanical, and those machines would obviously lack it.

I said "our stupidity" as if we mere mortals, common people, have something to do with that technological push to the creation of AI. I still think is much hype for nothing but faster computers, and that conscience is not on the menu at all. Mainly because whether consciousness is just a mirage or nobody knows what it is whatsoever. So, how do they pretend to know and create it? They are selling us more crap, that's all. And making it hype.

Much ado about nothing. AI of any kind is worthless if the environment is destroyed.

I remember very vividly the last round of AI-optimism in the early 90's. It was extremely naive. To put it mildly. Nothing convinces me that this round of AI-optimism is any wiser

I would make them pay their fair share of taxes first. Intelligence, artificial or not, demands the closure of tax havens, for instance.

Xabier Ostale Harari is still young and does demonstrate areas of knowledge where he could still learn a few things, notably in biology, regarding ecosystems, dwindling natural resources associated with EROEI. I would be looking forward for his future books.
